Why get coaching?
Coaching is vital to success in every area of life. When Heather’s daughter, Stacie, was studying to be a serious figure skater, finding the right coach was very important. As her skating improved, new coaches had to be found who could take her to the next level of skill attainment. The coach had to know and have already experienced the level she was working toward. With each coach, they took her back through the basics to ensure that nothing had been missed and that she had a solid foundation before they stretched her to her next skill level.

Heather could have given her a pair of skates, put her on a patch of ice, and told her to practice until she was good. Perhaps she would have gained some skill that way, but she wouldn’t have gone as far or as fast as she did. Her coaches were able to focus in on exactly what worked and didn’t work for her. They gave her activities to build specific muscles and enhance particular skills. It wasn’t easy for her. On many days, after 5-8 hours on the ice, her feet would be in blisters (even though she was wearing custom fitted $800 skates) and she would be bone tired. She stayed at it, because she was determined to be her best.

And so it is with you. If you want to be your best, finding the coach who can help you tweak your skills, push you in ways, you didn’t know were possible will greatly speed your process and enhance your development. You must be willing to be held accountable, accept new ideas and approaches, change behaviors, and get to know yourself in new and different ways.

Coaching allows you to reach your goals and improve your life at an accelerated rate. Coaching allows you to reach higher and achieve more than you ever thought possible. You need a coach who can call you on your stuff, and push you out of your comfort zone. Growth isn’t always easy or fun—but it is always rewarding and worth the effort.

How is coaching different than therapy?

Coaching is a professional service that moves you from you are to where you dream of being. It is not about fixing you from the inside. It is about moving your life along--personally, professionally, and/or spiritually. Therapy is often described as the treatment of mental and emotional challenges with the end goal of relieving you of symptoms so you can experience improved social and vocational functioning. Coaching, on the other hand, enables you to focus on your strengths. Coaching is a form of a commitment to forward thinking and forward actions.

What to Talk about with Your Coach?
The power of an individual coaching session is that you control the topic, and direction of the coaching session. You have already established your goals—where you want to go. I merely act as a mirror, letting you know when your words, actions, thoughts, or beliefs do not support your goal achievement. Generally, your conversations will be determined by these goals and your life lessons concerning them. You are encouraged to talk about

  • What has happened in your life since your last session
  • How you are
  • Changes in your life
  • Progress toward your goals, projects, and activities
  • Successes and Opportunities
  • Questions and perplexing situations
  • Anything that you feel important
